Network TAP and the Importance of Web Performance Optimization

No matter what type of corporate network they are using, it is no secret that employees expect rapid Web access at all times. When an end-user thinks about visiting any website, they typically conjure up images of how reliable, secure, and stable it is. Website performance measurement firm Gomez has recently revealed findings that the average online visitor expects pages to load in two seconds or less, and after this time frame, about 40 percent of visitors will no longer be interested in the site at all.

What can you do to ensure these sites are working successfully? Well, one crucial element is a network TAP, an invaluable toolset that is made up of both appliances and probes that work together to passively and actively optimize the performance and security of a network’s core infrastructure, services and applications in any environment, whether it’s a large corporation, a government agency or a service provider.

Since this robust solution can accurately gain insight into traffic at exactly the right points within the network, companies should seamlessly integrate a network intelligence optimization layer into their core to manage the connection between the tools and the network. The most important factors to remain aware of when leveraging this solution are visibility, scalability and efficiency.

Now on the website’s end, Web Performance Optimization (WPO) is key in driving the overall Web user experience to ensure the pages are loading as fast as possible.

A recent article featured on ZDNET.com stated, “This is done through a variety of front-end optimization techniques that make it easier for Web browsers, as well as networks that deliver traffic, to load and render Web page content. These techniques include front-end optimization techniques such as minification, concatenation, subdomain sharing, and content compression; cache optimization such as expires-time extension’ and network optimization utilizing real-time network measurements to determine fastest paths from any end-user location.”

In many cases, businesses are under the impression that when attempting to ramp up site performance, they can just leverage the same type of offering for each individual scenario. However this is simply not true, “since designing and delivering different performance optimizations to different browsers, operating systems, geographies, devices, and visitor types is very difficult to do manually.”

One way to combat this it to utilize an automated WPO solution which enables site operators to simulate various performance  techniques to multiple site visitors that is determined when looking at factors such as geography, device, browser, or the relationship with the online business.

“What’s more, these solutions help you understand the impact of performance on the user experience — as well as marketing and financial goals — of the entire blend of optimizations that are being tested,” the article concluded.

VSS Monitoring (News - Alert) is a company deeply rooted in the network TAP space. The company’s TAP Series infiltrates traffic from full-duplex networks and are completely failsafe for 100 percent guaranteed network uptime.
